EMMA RODGERS

Distinction in Art and Design (ceramics) Masters Degree
First Class BA Hons Art and Design (ceramics and Glass)

Emma has worked in clay since the age of 13. Her figures are extraordinary; she draws with clay like an artist with a pencil.
Before she starts a piece Emma will research fully the bone structure, movement, energy and
character of an animal or particular figure.
This will involve photography, film and, in the case of her best known Monkey series, she was able to massage the gibbons on a recent visit to Thailand. This allowed Emma to actually study through touch the muscle tone and bone structure of these monkeys.
Her pieces are never solid, she feels that this prompts the viewer to imagine the missing areas thus creating a more interactive experience.
Emma is constantly pushing the boundaries of her work in terms of expression and use of materials. She will stretch and tear the clay to almost breaking point to recreate the feeling of life. If the clay can not sustain the demands she puts on it she will move to bronze. A good example is her “Fighting Hares” which have just two joins, impossible in clay.
