JITKA PALMER
Jitka was born in Prague, and originally trained in medicine, then
set up her first ceramic studio, whilst teaching anatomy at Masaryk
University at Brno.
In 1995 she moved to London and studied ceramics, then worked for ten
years as a freelance artist, exhibiting in England and abroad.
Jitka returned to the Czech republic in 1995, and for three years taught
English and Anatomy and Morphology for artists, at the same time continuing
to draw and paint.
Since 1998 she has been back in Britain at her new studio in Bristol.
Her clay vessels are painted with figurative motifs using coloured slips,
oxides, stains and clear glaze. Her work is narrative, based on stories
and themes, also drawing on personal experience in a complicated world
to reflect the spontaneity of ordinary human life.
Jitka creates strong tensions between the inside and outside surfaces
of her vessels in order to give each piece another dimension.
